Day 136 – Untouched

18 Aug

“Earth laughs in flowers.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

We can all agree that the weather has been miserable this season and in fact some of the hottest temperatures on record, and while the butterflies turned out in flocks because they seem to enjoy it the flowers did not. Everywhere you turn you see the dead remnants of what was once a beautiful flower garden or lovely wildflower left to grow on its own. It is sad, but I found out that when you come across that one flower among the dead that remains beautiful and untouched by the weather it is something very  special.

I was walking on Bardstown Road taking random shots when I came across this flower that rose up to meet the sun head on. All the flowers surrounding it were either completely dead or the petals were starting to wither under the intense heat but this one lone flower was not going to be defeated. It was standing alone giving hope and it was beautiful. In that moment it put a smile on my face and I hope it does the same for you.

Gorgeous! You are right though, everything is dead, and its nice to find a bit of color in this parched landscape.

That’s an inspiring story that comes with the pic… we can all learn something from this flower… it’s like Lt. Dan said in Forrest Gump… “YOU’LL NEVER SINK THIS BOAT!”

What a beautiful and colorful picture! Did you get a wider shot that showed the dead amongst this little flower? I’d love to see that one as well!

Your lone survivor is beautiful. We have purple cone flowers too (Echinacea purpurea), and they too are struggling in this extreme heat. If you are familiar with Echinacea tea, this is where it comes from – the leaves and stems! Isn’t that cool?
